Wombats are marsupials and carry their young (joeys) in the mother’s pouch until they are big enough to be independent.
When first born, wombats weigh only one gram and their mouths are attached to the mother’s teat. At this stage they are furless and wildlife carers refer to them as ‘Pinkies”.
Young wombats leave the pouch at about five months old, and care for themselves (are independent) at seven months.
