Wombats are Wonderful!

How well do you know one of Australia's favorite stubby marsupials?
Picture
  • A shy, cautious and stubborn animal can be challenging to observe in natural habitats. This is because if it is too hot, they will only come out at night.
  • The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat is the smallest of all three wombat species.  Robust, muscular and powerfully built, this marsupial has short, stubby legs and strong claws.
  • It uses claws and muscular power to excavate very large tunnels through hard limestone, rocks and dirt.
  • Broad, flattened skull with broad flat snouts covered in (often white) hair.
  • Pointy ears and soft hair that feels smooth and silky like fur.
  • Approximately 35 cm tall. Body length ranges from 77 - 93 cm and adults typically weigh between   19 - 32 kg compared to the body length of 90 – 115 cm and 22 – 39 kg for a Bare-nosed (Common) Wombat.
  • Teeth grow continuously, wearing down over time, due to its diet.
  • Can crush the skull of a predator against the ceiling of a burrow, using its hard flat bone above its bottom (rump). read more about their DEADLY BUMS here
  • Female pouches point backwards to avoid filling with dirt when burrowing.
  • Poor eyesight, so they deposit scats in their tracks and 'follow their noses' in the dark to find their way around.
